Villains to expect in ‘Gotham’ season 2

HARTFORD – So far, Gotham has covered the back stories of quite a few, well-known villains from the Batman comic book series, such as Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Hugo Strange, Two-Face, and Victor Zsasz.

But who can fans expect in Gotham season 2?

Mr. Freeze

Mr. Freeze

Confirmed by executive producer Danny Cannon, Mr. Freeze, also known as Victor Fries, will be making an appearance with an entirely new back story from the comics. although there is still speculation if this will happen in season two or three.

The Mad Hatter

The Mad Hatter

Recently confirmed by producer John Stephens via the official Gotham Twitter handle, season two will definitely introduce us to Clayface and The Mad Hatter.

Clayface3

Clayface

For those who aren’t familiar with these two villains, Clayface is said to have a body made out of living mud, with the ability to both shapeshift into anything he pleases, and to melt people just be touching them.  The Mad Hatter is a neuroscientist who places mind control devices in hats to gain control over anyone who wears them.

Season two will also feature the evil outbreaks of both Edward Nygma (The Riddler) and Two-Face, which fans have been anxiously waiting for.

Two Face

Two-Face

The_Riddler_in_B.A.A

The Riddler

The Ogre (Milo Ventimiglia), another Batman villain, will make his first appearance when Gotham season 1 returns on Monday, April 13.

Many fans are still anxiously awaiting the arrival of The Joker, which producers have not done more than hint about, as well as the arrival of Harley Quinn.  There has  been much speculation as to which of the current characters may, in fact, be young versions of the villains, but the Gotham crew is keeping a tight lid on that information.  Fans will just have to keep watching the show to find out!

Amazon launches “Home Services” business, wants to give you drum lessons

Amazon

Today Amazon officially announced Amazon Home Services, a marketplace where customers can request repair work and personal lessons from service providers in their area. The concept is like TaskRabbit—services are provided by individual contractors, not Amazon, but those contractors are rated by customers and vetted by the online shopping behemoth. All services provided are backed by Amazon.

Services include banal things like assembling a bed (from $57 to $140), installing a garbage disposal ($149 to $200), setting up a wireless printer ($84 to $210), or “computer software configuration” ($120 to $210). The value proposition for Amazon Home Services is that people don’t have to call around to find a contractor and then get a quote from them—the price is listed up front. For a custom job, you’ll get a quote delivered to you after you specify the details of the job.

You can also find more whimsical things on Amazon Home Services, like drum lessons or “goat grazers”—sadly there were no master drummers or goats for hire in my area. With drum lessons (or math lessons or French lessons, all of which are listed on Amazon’s website now) buyers can get a free trial lesson and then pay for a package of further instruction through the site. If you’re hiring a goat, the price will depend on how much backyard you need it to eat.

(“Goats can eat thistle, blackberry, English Ivy, kudzu, poison ivy, poison sumac, poison oak, wisteria, various grasses, and more,” Amazon’s information page on that service helpfully offers. The online marketplace revolution is about to disrupt goat diets forever!)

Still, the services vary by location (good luck getting anything done in Idaho) and getting the job done is not always as easy as you might imagine. The cheapest service I could find in my area was getting windshield wipers replaced ($15 if you provide your own wiper blades). I selected that service, hoping that a team of underemployed teens/drones would descend on my vehicle within the hour. I was disappointed to learn that, despite the “Home Services” moniker, I could only get the service if I took my car in to a nearby shop—even then, I couldn’t get an appointment until Wednesday. Sorry, but I can replace my own wiper blades, after all.

Some services, like “virus and spyware removal,” will give you the option of coming in to a store that provides the service or tacking on an extra $30 to get someone to do it in your home. That makes Amazon’s computer repair services not unlike Best Buy’s Geek Squad, which has been running a similar business model for at least a decade.

I also checked out the Amazon Home Services page for tire installation. Obviously that’s a service that would be best done in a garage, but the Amazon listing didn’t offer the name of the company providing the service, so I searched for the address of the place I’d have to take my car to, and it came up with SpeeDee Oil Change & Auto Service in Redwood City. I contacted the owner of SpeeDee, Arun Nageal, and he said he was a part of Amazon Home Services’ beta program and has had seven or eight new customers this year because of the listing on Amazon.

“I took over this business in September of last year, and I was looking at every possible way to grow my business,” Nageal said over the phone. “Amazon coincidentally approached me and said, ‘would you be interested?’… It sounded like a good idea. I’m an Amazon user and a shopper,” he said.

He was a little bit skeptical at first, mostly because Amazon makes service providers list the fees for their services upfront. “It does make me a little bit nervous [to list prices on Amazon], but at the end of the day, you have to do pros and cons, and the con is people are going to know competitors’ prices, but at the end of the day it’s equally easy to just walk over to another shop and ask their price,” Nageal said.

He added that he wasn’t sure what percentage Amazon was taking from transactions done over its new marketplace. “The reason I need to check is I also have something with a Groupon; sometimes it’s a little muddy.”

Amazon has been looking to expand into home services for quite some time, but now that its market has launched, the featured services seem a little slim. Babysitting is not on the list, for example, although it was rumored to be one of the first things offered.

Of course, Amazon takes a cut. (The company isn’t offering details, but The Verge says a beta version of Amazon Home Services’ website showed Amazon taking 20 percent on standard services, 15 percent on custom, and 10 percent on recurring services). It’s safe to assume that the money for Amazon is in installation jobs, where a person comes out once to set up one physical object, ideally also purchased on Amazon.

Once you find a babysitter or drum teacher you like on Amazon Home Services, there’s less of a drive to keep paying through Amazon if the company is taking a cut. If you really love your drum teacher, you’ll pay her under the table and let her keep the extra 10 percent.

Time to stop trusting ‘elitist mentality’

Dear Editor:

If our children today can see no future why can’t we fix that? Hearing talk of candidates we may have to vote for give us no faith in the future. Haven’t we seen enough of those lawyers back, money hungry, greedy, dishonest thieves?

This Poison Ivy league lawyer mentality we have walking thru our government and courthouse halls have become an embarrassment to the whole world. The last 50 years has been too much to bear. We all need to contribute our lives to the good of mankind and God’s green earth! We need to be able to have jobs, become more concerned for our children and the future of the world. If we cannot get a hold on our world, maybe we need to turn it over the our children whose future we have crafted.

We can no longer trust this elitist mentality. I know anything is better than what we have now. When we must arm our school teachers with guns to protect our children, we are losing out world to the devil.

The search resumes for missing Chelsea Bruck

Chelsea Bruck was last seen at a Halloween party in Frenchtown Township. Just a few miles from where purple ribbons wrap the small town of Newport, volunteers, state police, border patrol and Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies all scoured the area near the Lake Eerie shoreline to try to find the missing 22-year-old.

“It’s been in the works for awhile, just waiting for the weather to clear,” said Chelsea’s mom Leannda Bruck.

Chelsea Bruck was last seen not far from this area last October. She was wearing a “poison ivy” costume and went to a Halloween party. The search, covering five miles off of Jefferson Avenue and Sigler roads, lasted about five hours Thursday. But Chelsea’s mother said the search didn’t turn up any clues.

“It’s hard but I’m also a very strong, very faithful person and no news is good news. I wish the good news would come very fast, but I’d rather have no news than bad news,” said Leannda.

Chelsea’s mom said now that it’s getting warmer there will be more searches, adding that she mails out fliers across the country daily. She posts photos of Chelsea and the person of interest everywhere she can.

Leannda said,”It’s an emotional roller coaster, but like I said, my faith is strong, it keeps me going, my dear Lord keeps me going, my family keeps me going.”

Holding onto pictures of Chelsea, purple ribbons and hope, this mother said what also keeps her going is the thought that her daughter is out there and she is alive.

“If you don’t stick to that thought and you’re thinking negative that’s the devil. The devil is not going to win on mom’s watch,” said Leannda.

Chelsea’s mother said she wants to remind people that there is a reward through Crime Stoppers of more than $30,000. If you have any information on the disappearance of Chelsea Bruck, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-speak-up.

Video: Why 'hypoallergenic' isn't a thing

Credit: American Chemical Society

It’s a simple claim made on thousands of personal care products for adults and kids: hypoallergenic. But what does that actually mean? Turns out, it can mean whatever manufacturers want it to mean, and that can leave you feeling itchy.

Speaking of Chemistry is back this week with Sophia Cai explaining why “hypoallergenic” isn’t really a thing.

Your kid is really sick, but the doctor says it’s ‘just a virus’

March 17

Your child has been coughing for days; she hasn’t slept in three nights (which means that you haven’t slept in three nights). She has a fever, has morphed into a living snot factory and has a rash that you think might be leprosy. Or smallpox. Or poison ivy.

So you call the pediatrician, who agrees to squeeze you in. When you arrive, you are ushered immediately into that germ-ridden purgatory pediatricians call the “Sick Child Waiting Room.” You strongly warn your child not to touch anything — because no matter how sick your kid is, the ones who were there earlier might have been sicker. And finally you see the doctor, who does a quick physical exam from as far away as his arms will allow, and scribbles something on your checkout sheet.

“It’s just a virus. He’ll be fine,” he says, and sends you off, leaving you wondering what exactly “just a virus” is supposed to mean and feeling quite confident that your child is far from “fine.”

So what, exactly, is “just a virus”? Well, a virus is a certain type of microorganism, or germ. Viruses have some properties that distinguish them from bacteria and other less common infections, but unless you own a microscope, a lab coat and a petri dish, you probably don’t really care.

Calling something “just a virus” is really misleading, because there are some pretty wicked viruses out there. HIV, polio and Ebola are all viruses. The herpes virus that causes mouth sores in some people can cause brain hemorrhages, seizures and death in infants. Other viruses can lead to cancer, liver failure and heart failure.

Fortunately, most of them don’t. In fact, most of them don’t cause any symptoms at all. And most of the viruses that do produce symptoms will cause some nasal congestion or a sore throat. Really, the vast majority of viral infections are more inconvenient than harmful. But calling something “just a virus” is a bit like saying something is “just an animal.” It could be a cuddly puppy or an angry wolverine; you really need to know more about it before you choose an approach.

Of course, when your pediatrician diagnoses your child with “just a virus,” he’s implying that it’s one of those that doesn’t typically cause much harm. There are thousands of viruses out there that can cause cold symptoms, and we don’t tend to test for them. It would be ridiculously expensive, it wouldn’t change what we do and you probably wouldn’t get the test result until the symptoms had gone away.

“Just a virus” is also implying that it’s a problem he can’t do much about. In contrast to bacterial infections, which are typically treated with antibiotics, most viral infections are stomped out by your immune system in a few days. Antibiotics don’t do a thing to treat viruses.

There are a handful of viruses that we can immunize against — such as measles and chickenpox — often with very good effectiveness. There also are a few that we can give medicine to treat, such as HIV and herpes. But these tend to be the bad ones, not the ones that cause colds. For the rest of them, you just have to give them time.

It’s never really the wrong decision to take your child to the pediatrician. There’s always a chance that there could be something else going on. But for most viral illnesses, your child would probably do just as well waiting it out at home.

If you do take your child to the doctor for a virus of the “just a” variety, she may be diagnosed with a “viral syndrome,” “upper respiratory infection” or “acute viral rhinitis.” These are doctor terms for “a cold.” (When you go to the trouble of bringing your child in, we don’t want to seem like we are downplaying your concerns, so we use a complicated medical term instead of “a cold.”)

After making this diagnosis, the doctor will probably provide reassurance and recommend “symptomatic care.” This means fluids, rest, humidifiers — things you were probably doing already. I promise, it’s not that we don’t understand how miserable “just a” viruses can be. Trust me, we’ve all picked up more than our share from snotty little kids (including our own). It’s also not that we don’t care. It’s just that we have nothing else to offer.

But don’t worry. It’s just a virus. He’ll be fine.

Correction: An earlier version of this article included pertussis in a group of illnesses caused by viruses. Pertussis is caused by a bacteria. This article has been corrected.

Hayes is a resident physician in pediatrics in Greenville, S.C. This article is reprinted from his parenting and pediatrics blog, at www.chadhayesmd.com.

Jada Pinkett Smith Says She’s Leaving ‘Gotham’ After Season One

Jada Pinkett Smith Gotham

One thing we know about Gotham is most of the characters are going to survive. The show has to endure long enough for a young Bruce Wayne to grow up, become Batman, and then tangle with characters like Penguin, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and the Joker. Any mystery the show has revolves either in how that will all play out, or in new characters not previously seen in comic books or movies.

The most prominent new character in the show’s first season is Fish Mooney, played by Jada Pinkett Smith. She’s a major new villain specific to the show who looked to have a long future in Gotham. In a new interview, however, Pinkett-Smith said she’s not likely to return to Gotham after this season. Read the Jada Pinkett Smith Gotham Season 2 quotes below.

The actress said this on a recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Michael (via Variety). She was asked if she was coming back for Gotham season two:

I don’t think so, no. I signed for a year and the year is up. But, there are some great things coming ahead on ‘Gotham,’ believe you me, there’s a lot of good stuff coming.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean Mooney dies. Host Michael Strahan surmised that the character could pop up anywhere to which the actress replied:

She could show up anywhere, you never know.

Variety also got in touch with the show’s producers, who released this vague statement:

Fish Mooney’s storyline takes a lot of interesting twists and turns into the finale of season one of Gotham.

To be honest I’m not watching Gotham. I hear good things about Gotham, but I never felt the urge to delve too deep into this world once the show made it clear it was more interested in set-up than execution. At least, that’s how it felt from the outside looking in. Many young versions of classic characters being introduced with Batman still a decade away? That feels like a lot of wheel-spinning for me, and a new character like Mooney seemed designed to facilitate that. But if Jada Pinkett-Smith is leaving the show, who can now be set into that unpredictable, story driving role?
