Women take nontraditional trail to empowerment

BY MATT MARKEY
BLADE OUTDOORS EDITOR

There is more to encounter along a rugged trek through the mountains than mud, boulders and an occasional cluster of poison ivy. For the women who are now taking to the trails, there is immense power and a strong sense of freedom found in trudging up those narrow switchbacks and imposing inclines.

Backpacking, climbing, hiking, and mountaineering are welcoming women in increasing numbers, and women are finding significant rewards while traversing terrain that in the distant past belonged primarily to men. Many parks throughout the country are now offering hiking and backpacking programs designed specifically for women, and these programs often include survival skills training, orienteering, map reading, sessions on setting up a camp, and even lessons on safety in bear country.

April Bruder is the mother of three and a kindergarten teacher in the Cincinnati area. She took part in the “Women in the Wilderness” program in the Great Smoky Mountains and came back anxious for a return trip.

“I love being outside, and I love the wilderness, so the idea of being in the outdoors with like-minded women sounded really appealing,” she said. “I was looking for a great experience, and it was all that, and more.”

Bruder said she and her family are not experienced campers, and that her husband “rolled his eyes” when she first pitched the notion of going backpacking, but eventually he was supportive of her taking part in such an adventure.

“I learned so much about the forest — everything is a nature lesson when you have a good guide,” she said. “We walked through flooded creeks and we slept outside, with the bears. This is so empowering for women, just to show ourselves that we can do it, and prove to others that we can do it.”

Most of the backpacking trips in the “Women in the Wilderness” program last three days, but longer outings are available. The groups are eased into the experience with a 3-5 mile hike the first day. Vesna Plakanis, who runs “A Walk in the Woods” guide service in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, said the outdoors adventure provides women with a boost in self confidence that can benefit every aspect of their lives.

“Women who join us are forever changed,” Plakanis said. “They come away feeling so strong and confident after learning how to make a fire with just one match, how to deal with the sounds and darkness of the woods at night and how to make themselves comfortable in the natural world. It’s empowering for a woman to give herself permission to do something just for her and to accomplish something she never thought she could do.”

Amy Conn is an assistant principal in the Canton school system, and following a divorce she decided she needed an experience that would be both demanding and rewarding, and she found it in a backpacking trip along the Appalachian Trail.

“I had some challenges in my life, and I wanted to do something I could accomplish for myself,” she said. “I debated going on this trip for a long time, and then I finally paid for it so I would have to go. I just needed something that was just me — nobody helped. I could look back and say I did it all on my own.”

Conn, who has three children, said she initially balked at going backpacking in the mountains, fearing she might not be able to handle the physical demands of the trip. There would be no contact with the outside world during the hike, and no cell service available.

“My family thought I was crazy, and I was really afraid to go, but it turned out to be much more than I expected,” she said. “It was not like a normal vacation at all. We were 12 miles from the nearest road, but you get used to the isolation, and when you finish, the sense of accomplishment is much more that I ever expected.”

Many women who step out independently and take that initial backpacking trip, make that baptismal climb, or walk a mountain trail for the first time say they want to return with their children and/or their husband so that family members can share the fun and the adventure.

“It is not on purpose, but I think women fall into that routine when they are married and they always have someone else to lean on, someone else to take the trash out, and so on,” Conn said.

“But doing this kind of thing on your own — it is empowering. You put one foot in front of the other and get lost in your thoughts, but when you come back you just want to do it again, and take your kids and your family along. You want them to have the same great experience in the outdoors.”

Along a similar line, Ohio and Michigan both offer a wide range of skills training in the “Becoming an Outdoors Woman” program, which has been around for nearly 25 years and is now available in 44 states and nine Canadian provinces.

The workshops take place over a long weekend and in Ohio they are coordinated through the Division of Wildlife. Each fall, a group of women gather to learn how to handle a fly rod, navigate whitewater in a kayak, or load and fire a muzzleloader. There are also sessions in basic canoeing, cartridge reloading, outdoor photography, archery, basic shotgun use, tracking, handgun basics, using a tree stand, trail foods, and Dutch oven cooking. More information on the Ohio “Becoming an Outdoors Woman” program is available by calling the 1-800-WILDLIFE hotline.

The “Becoming an Outdoors Woman” workshops offered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources are focused on offering women the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to enjoy activities such as hunting, fishing, canoeing, orienteering, and backpacking, with all of the lessons emphasizing a “hands-on” approach.

More information on the Michigan “Becoming an Outdoors Woman” program is available by emailing Sharon Pitz: pitzs@michigan.gov. Additional information on the “Women in the Wilderness” outings in Great Smoky Mountains at: National Park can be found at the AWalkintheWoods.com website.

Time to stop trusting ‘elitist mentality’

Dear Editor:

If our children today can see no future why can’t we fix that? Hearing talk of candidates we may have to vote for give us no faith in the future. Haven’t we seen enough of those lawyers back, money hungry, greedy, dishonest thieves?

This Poison Ivy league lawyer mentality we have walking thru our government and courthouse halls have become an embarrassment to the whole world. The last 50 years has been too much to bear. We all need to contribute our lives to the good of mankind and God’s green earth! We need to be able to have jobs, become more concerned for our children and the future of the world. If we cannot get a hold on our world, maybe we need to turn it over the our children whose future we have crafted.

We can no longer trust this elitist mentality. I know anything is better than what we have now. When we must arm our school teachers with guns to protect our children, we are losing out world to the devil.

Bronx man sentenced in rat poison death of 5-year-old son

NEW YORK (AP) – A New York City man will spend 20 years to life in prison for killing his 5-year-old son and sickening his 7-year-old daughter with poison-laced pizza.

After learning that his ex-wife was seeing another man, Leonardo Espinal took it out on their children in November 2012 by tainting their pizza with rat poison, Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson said Thursday after the sentencing.

The little girl, Mia, threw up after eating the pizza. When her brother, Steward, soiled himself, their father took him into the bathroom.

Espinal’s stepmother called 911. Police broke down the bathroom door. Steward was in the bathtub, dead from a combination of the poison and being submerged in water.

“My beloved angel,” the children’s mother, Rosaura Abreu, said in a victim impact statement that was written in Spanish, translated into English and read by a prosecutor in court.

“I will never forget the last time I saw my little son. … He was radiant, happy, content and followed me all around the house.”

“When it was time for me to leave, he followed me to the door and I knelt down to talk with him. It’s as if my heart knew that it would be the last time I would see him alive.”

Steward told his mother that he loved her. They hugged and she said “that I loved him from the bottom of my heart, more than own life.”

After the crime, Mia suffered anxiety attacks at the mere mention of returning to the apartment. “She never wanted to sleep in the same bed where she slept with her Steward, protecting him from monsters,” their mother said.

Therapy has helped them, but is by no means a cure-all.

“Mia suffers a great deal when she goes to parties, when she goes to bed, when she plays with other children, when she sees photos of him, when she sees another boy the same age as him, when she sees me sad because she knows I am thinking of him,” Abreu said.

Espinal pleaded guilty last month to murder and attempted murder.

“All we can do,” said Abreu, “is take it day by day.”

The search resumes for missing Chelsea Bruck

Chelsea Bruck was last seen at a Halloween party in Frenchtown Township. Just a few miles from where purple ribbons wrap the small town of Newport, volunteers, state police, border patrol and Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies all scoured the area near the Lake Eerie shoreline to try to find the missing 22-year-old.

“It’s been in the works for awhile, just waiting for the weather to clear,” said Chelsea’s mom Leannda Bruck.

Chelsea Bruck was last seen not far from this area last October. She was wearing a “poison ivy” costume and went to a Halloween party. The search, covering five miles off of Jefferson Avenue and Sigler roads, lasted about five hours Thursday. But Chelsea’s mother said the search didn’t turn up any clues.

“It’s hard but I’m also a very strong, very faithful person and no news is good news. I wish the good news would come very fast, but I’d rather have no news than bad news,” said Leannda.

Chelsea’s mom said now that it’s getting warmer there will be more searches, adding that she mails out fliers across the country daily. She posts photos of Chelsea and the person of interest everywhere she can.

Leannda said,”It’s an emotional roller coaster, but like I said, my faith is strong, it keeps me going, my dear Lord keeps me going, my family keeps me going.”

Holding onto pictures of Chelsea, purple ribbons and hope, this mother said what also keeps her going is the thought that her daughter is out there and she is alive.

“If you don’t stick to that thought and you’re thinking negative that’s the devil. The devil is not going to win on mom’s watch,” said Leannda.

Chelsea’s mother said she wants to remind people that there is a reward through Crime Stoppers of more than $30,000. If you have any information on the disappearance of Chelsea Bruck, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-speak-up.

Video: Why 'hypoallergenic' isn't a thing

It’s a simple claim made on thousands of personal care products for adults and kids: hypoallergenic. But what does that actually mean? Turns out, it can mean whatever manufacturers want it to mean, and that can leave you feeling itchy.

Speaking of Chemistry is back this week with Sophia Cai explaining why “hypoallergenic” isn’t really a thing.

Your kid is really sick, but the doctor says it’s ‘just a virus’

March 17

Your child has been coughing for days; she hasn’t slept in three nights (which means that you haven’t slept in three nights). She has a fever, has morphed into a living snot factory and has a rash that you think might be leprosy. Or smallpox. Or poison ivy.

So you call the pediatrician, who agrees to squeeze you in. When you arrive, you are ushered immediately into that germ-ridden purgatory pediatricians call the “Sick Child Waiting Room.” You strongly warn your child not to touch anything — because no matter how sick your kid is, the ones who were there earlier might have been sicker. And finally you see the doctor, who does a quick physical exam from as far away as his arms will allow, and scribbles something on your checkout sheet.

“It’s just a virus. He’ll be fine,” he says, and sends you off, leaving you wondering what exactly “just a virus” is supposed to mean and feeling quite confident that your child is far from “fine.”

So what, exactly, is “just a virus”? Well, a virus is a certain type of microorganism, or germ. Viruses have some properties that distinguish them from bacteria and other less common infections, but unless you own a microscope, a lab coat and a petri dish, you probably don’t really care.

Calling something “just a virus” is really misleading, because there are some pretty wicked viruses out there. HIV, polio and Ebola are all viruses. The herpes virus that causes mouth sores in some people can cause brain hemorrhages, seizures and death in infants. Other viruses can lead to cancer, liver failure and heart failure.

Fortunately, most of them don’t. In fact, most of them don’t cause any symptoms at all. And most of the viruses that do produce symptoms will cause some nasal congestion or a sore throat. Really, the vast majority of viral infections are more inconvenient than harmful. But calling something “just a virus” is a bit like saying something is “just an animal.” It could be a cuddly puppy or an angry wolverine; you really need to know more about it before you choose an approach.

Of course, when your pediatrician diagnoses your child with “just a virus,” he’s implying that it’s one of those that doesn’t typically cause much harm. There are thousands of viruses out there that can cause cold symptoms, and we don’t tend to test for them. It would be ridiculously expensive, it wouldn’t change what we do and you probably wouldn’t get the test result until the symptoms had gone away.

“Just a virus” is also implying that it’s a problem he can’t do much about. In contrast to bacterial infections, which are typically treated with antibiotics, most viral infections are stomped out by your immune system in a few days. Antibiotics don’t do a thing to treat viruses.

There are a handful of viruses that we can immunize against — such as measles and chickenpox — often with very good effectiveness. There also are a few that we can give medicine to treat, such as HIV and herpes. But these tend to be the bad ones, not the ones that cause colds. For the rest of them, you just have to give them time.

It’s never really the wrong decision to take your child to the pediatrician. There’s always a chance that there could be something else going on. But for most viral illnesses, your child would probably do just as well waiting it out at home.

If you do take your child to the doctor for a virus of the “just a” variety, she may be diagnosed with a “viral syndrome,” “upper respiratory infection” or “acute viral rhinitis.” These are doctor terms for “a cold.” (When you go to the trouble of bringing your child in, we don’t want to seem like we are downplaying your concerns, so we use a complicated medical term instead of “a cold.”)

After making this diagnosis, the doctor will probably provide reassurance and recommend “symptomatic care.” This means fluids, rest, humidifiers — things you were probably doing already. I promise, it’s not that we don’t understand how miserable “just a” viruses can be. Trust me, we’ve all picked up more than our share from snotty little kids (including our own). It’s also not that we don’t care. It’s just that we have nothing else to offer.

But don’t worry. It’s just a virus. He’ll be fine.

Correction: An earlier version of this article included pertussis in a group of illnesses caused by viruses. Pertussis is caused by a bacteria. This article has been corrected.

Hayes is a resident physician in pediatrics in Greenville, S.C. This article is reprinted from his parenting and pediatrics blog, at www.chadhayesmd.com.
